List of Common Hantaran (Malay Wedding Gift)

In Malaysia Wedding culture of Malay ethnic group, the exchange of Wedding Gift (“Hantaran”) between both parties of Bride and Groom is necessary in the engagement and wedding ceremony. The event of Gift exchange will be initiated by the Groom side and the present will be presented to the Bride house. In return, the Bride side will present their gifts to the Groom side.

The total of items as the wedding gift are not fixed depend on the budget and agreed upon the agreement between Bride and Groom family. The quantity of items should be in odd number, for example sending 5 items and in return of 7 items, 7items in return of 9 in terms and so on, in which the lower quantities by the Groom and respond with more quantities by the. In other word, it’s a traditional practice for the Bride to present 2 more items than the present of the Groom.

However in the new generation world, the number of “Hantaran” can be the same from both parties. The items used as the Wedding gifts are not so bound by the rules and customs that have been set before. Instead, what is more important is both parties need to meet consensus and with their whole heart during the “Hantaran” exchange ceremony.
